2010 Instructor Certification Training Program
2010 Applications are due May 28th.
You can make a difference in how the next generation is raised. Apply today.
Learn to support parents in your community and help them build strong families where children get what they need to be physically and mentally healthy, achieve well in school, lead nonviolent lives, respect their bodies and turn into compassionate and caring adults themsleves.
This year-long program is open to individuals with the skills and experience to teach, support and mentor parents and child care professionals as they learn the tools of Parenting by Connection. Due to the high level of interest in Hand in Hand certification, we will offer a distance learning program along with the local training sessions. Even so, there still may not be room for all the highly qualified candidates we would like to accept. We hope to continue to increase the size of the program in 2011 to allow us to train all the qualified candidates who apply.
If you are a parent or caregiver interested in deepening your personal Parenting by Connection skills and understanding, but not interested in teaching others at this time, please apply instead to our next Parents Intensive in Parenting by Connection.Three levels of Instructor Certification will be available: Trainers, Teachers or Assistant Teachers.
When you become certified as a Hand In Hand instructor, you will then be trained, in shorter additional workshops, to teach one or both of our two current curricula, the 3-week Tantrum Training Class and/or the 6-week Building Emotional Understanding class, both of which can be presented in Spanish or English. Teachers and Assistant Teachers will also learn how to give talks to groups on at least ten frequently requested topics. After completion of the Instructor Certification Program, instructors may choose to apply for continued development as Hand in Hand Trainers or One-on-One Parent Consultants.
Local participants in the Certification Program attend ten training classes, one per month, on Saturdays. (Dates: September 11, October 16, November 13, January 8, February 5, March 5, April 9, May 7, June 4, July 9)
For those who live outside the San Francisco Bay Area, online video of the training classes is made available, and the handouts and homework that accompany each training are posted online. Class conference calls by phone, provide the opportunity for all candidates to ask questions, share stories of how they are using Parenting by Connection, and clarify the points made in each training. Participants must be able to access video files via computer, and must have e-mail access to participate in the Distance Learning program.
Both local and Distance Learning program participants are strongly encouraged to attend our summer weekend workshop.
Both local and Distance Learners will have access to a weekly mentoring teleconference call, which will provide support and perspective that aids them as they practice using Listening Tools to improve their family and work lives.
A time commitment of 9 - 12 hours per month of direct study and training participation is expected. Reading will be assigned, and participants must commit to using Listening Tools for their own support and within their families. Participants without children of their own will need to develop relationships with children with whom they can practice using Listening Tools throughout the program. Participants are expected to develop at least one Listening Partnership that is pursued on a regular basis in order to attain and maintain certification to teach Parenting by Connection. Each participant commits to spending 4-8 hours during the training year on Hand in Hand administrative projects to develop a broad understanding of the organization and its place in the community.
Participants will be asked to fill out a self-assessment that will help us get to know them, and help them gauge their skills and understandings in the areas important to practicing and teaching Parenting by Connection. A certification interview at the end of the program will be geared to a fresh and careful assessment of participants' skills and understandings, and the results of that interview will determine the level of certification that can be approved, and the steps necessary to attain the next level of competence.

About Hand in Hand
Hand in Hand nurtures the "super-protective factor" of parent child connection through an approach called Parenting by Connection which fosters close, responsive relationships between parents and children. This approach is based on the principles of respect, listening, leadership development and the importance of interpersonal connections. Parenting by Connection is consistent with best practices in child development as well as the latest research in both attachment and interpersonal neurobiology. We help parents and professionals gain perspective on their work and give them tools to build stronger connections within their families, in their work and in their communities.
