How Your Attention Helps Children Play Together

from the hand in hand blog(1)

pin-help-children-playMy twin boys and I had gone away for a couple of days together with a friend and her son, plus two close relatives.

I'm not sure where the difficulties came from, but at the start of the trip our children couldn’t play together more than two minutes without it becoming tense. It seemed there was always some shouting or kicking, or trying to scare each other.

I thought that some Special Time might help the children play together, and I asked my father to take care of one of his grandsons while I spent time playing with the other without being interrupted.

But when our time began, my friend’s son approached either my father, one of my sons, or me, and I soon realized that we would not be able to prevent him from interrupting us.

Making Space for Play

I shared the concept of Special Time with my friend and told her that I needed some time one-on-one with my sons. She came from the kitchen with her mom to take care of her son, who, as a result received his first half an hour of “almost Special Time!”

Once organized, I found it relaxing and enjoyable to be able to grant all my attention to one of my sons one after the other. There's a real happiness for me to be close and to follow his play as his creativity and his imagination takes over.

At three and a half years old, special-time-helps-playmy boys really appreciate these times, which they call “five minutes,” because often this is how long our sessions are. At the end of his Special Time that day, one of my boys said, beaming, “That was a long five minutes, especially with Grandpa!”

Positive Play

I may have been the only adult to notice, but after this time of attention the three children were able to play together around a coffee table well for a good fifteen minutes. A few times I even saw obvious acts of cooperation when one of them happily agreed to lend a toy of his, or when another one shared his game.

While there were moments of disconnection later, and some times where one of the boys had bigger tensions to offload, it was easy to see the boy's added contentment after Special Time.

And I got my own Special Time too – enjoying very much the fifteen minutes where I could talk uninterrupted with my friend!

Why it Works:

Children are born with a need to feel connected to adults around them, most obviously their parents. One-on-one time builds this connection, and as the adult watches and interacts as the child takes the lead, children's confidence and contentment grows.
